Jim Cummings ran Oceans Talent and Athena side by side, in the same two weeks, for two different roles. Here’s what he found.

The Backstory

Pelorus is a strategic finance firm serving founder-led businesses from bootstrapped through Series B. In the summer of 2026, founder Jim Cummings had two seats to fill at once: an executive assistant and a senior financial analyst.

He sourced the EA through Athena and the analyst through Oceans Talent. Both engagements launched within days of each other, giving Jim as close to a controlled, side-by-side comparison as any buyer gets. What follows is that comparison, in his own account.

The Side-By-Side

The Athena Engagement

The pattern: payment up front, placement weeks later, no input on the match.

“I had no real say in who I got. There was no candidate interview and no way to evaluate skills before committing. Athena’s model is: pay first, wait weeks, then accept whoever they place with you.”
— Jim Cummings, Founder, Pelorus

Billing before onboarding. Athena billed Pelorus two weeks before onboarding the assistant. Jim was paying for an assistant who didn’t exist yet. A placement was promised within days on the kickoff call, then reconfirmed in writing shortly after, but the assistant didn’t start until two weeks later.

No input on the match. Jim was never offered a candidate interview or any way to evaluate skills before placement. Athena’s first candidate was withdrawn during their internal quality review, flagged for proactivity, consistency, and reliability.

Silence after payment. Once Athena had been paid, there was no single point of contact and no response. A billing-adjustment request moved through five status updates over two-plus weeks without resolution, routed across five contacts: onboarding, partnerships, operations, a director of operations, and sales.

Underperforming match. Deliverables included clearly AI-generated output with factual errors, for example restaurant recommendations tied to the wrong locations.

Contract disputed at exit. Athena couldn’t produce the executed agreement Jim requested three times, yet still enforced a commitment period and pursued two additional months of fees under it. When Jim proposed a mutual release with the account settled in full, Athena declined and maintained its fee demand.

The Oceans Talent Engagement

The pattern: evaluation up front, on-schedule start, one team throughout.

Evaluated before hiring. Jim interviewed Ana directly and ran him through Pelorus’s own case-study assessment, the same screen used for every analyst candidate. Ana was the strongest submission in the pool.

On-schedule delivery. Signed contract to start date: under a week. Ana started July 15 as planned, with billing aligned to the agreed engagement. Within 30 days, he owned 13-week cash flow models, monthly projections, and performance reporting for two clients, and delivered his first full diligence report by mid-August.

Terms in writing before signing. Contract terms were shared clearly before the agreement arrived, with no gaps to chase down or clarify once the contract was in hand.

One team, start to finish. The team that closed the deal stayed on the account. One point of contact, consistent response times, and no handoffs.

Consistent operator quality. Ana’s output was accurate and client-ready from the start. Cash flow models, monthly reporting, and a full diligence report were all delivered in Pelorus’s own templates, with no rework needed.

The Impact

Two vendors, one founder, the same two weeks, and only one delivered. Athena missed its own timeline, billed for service it hadn’t provided, and couldn’t produce the contract it tried to enforce. Oceans Talent let Jim test the hire before committing, delivered on schedule, and stayed just as responsive months in. That’s not a marginal difference. It’s the difference between a vendor and a partner.

“If another founder asked me where to go for a serious operational hire, I would point them to Oceans without hesitation. Oceans let me interview and test the candidate before committing, delivered a senior operator on schedule, and negotiated like a partner. The people who sold me the engagement were the same people answering my questions months later. That is the tell.”
— Jim Cummings, Founder, Pelorus
