My role as a Growth Marketer at Oceans
Working at Oceans has been an incredibly unique and enriching experience. My name is Shawn, and I serve as the Head of Growth for my client, a business that manufactures and sells modern photo booths. I am responsible for identifying new opportunities and strategies for growth, whilst heading the entire Marketing function. The experience has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to apply my broad scope of knowledge in a large and competitive market like the US.
A little about myself and my Client
The client I work with operates in the photo booth industry—a niche yet rapidly growing market. Their products are not just traditional photo booths; they are modern, technologically advanced machines that cater to a wide range of events and businesses. This industry is fast-paced, and staying ahead of trends is crucial. My role as Head of Growth means I work directly with the Founder and CEO of the company, and I am at the forefront of driving the company’s marketing strategies, ensuring we reach our target audience effectively and maintain a strong presence in the market via my growth hacking and marketing strategies.
Before joining Oceans, I had experience in various digital marketing roles locally, but working with a client of this nature in the US market has put my skills to the test in new ways. My background in leading and building teams, as well as my understanding of paid media marketing, SEO, PPC, social media, marketing funnels, and email marketing, has been invaluable. This role has pushed me to learn new tools and technologies that are critical for success in such a competitive environment.
My daily routine and responsibilities
My day is divided into two shifts. I work two asynchronous hours during the day, which provides me with the flexibility to plan the other aspects of my day around my work. I usually use this time to go over daily reports and the performance of the previous day or week, and to plan for the workday ahead. My client operates in US Central Time Zone (CST), which means I start in the late evening. This allows me to take care of personal matters during the day.
I start my workday in the evening with a daily huddle with my client team in the US. Working from home offers a calm, distraction-free environment that lets me stay focused and efficient. There's a sense of fulfillment as I wrap up a productive day before heading to bed. Depending on my mood, I might choose to work from home or settle into a coworking space for the day.
Challenges and solutions
Working remotely and managing a remote team presents a unique set of challenges. In my previous roles, my team was always in person, which made communication straightforward. However, remote work demands a different approach. I’ve had to develop my communication skills significantly, learning to over-communicate to ensure everyone is on the same page.
One of the biggest challenges of remote work is maintaining team morale and ensuring everyone feels part of a cohesive unit. Oceans has been instrumental in overcoming this challenge. The company has a strong culture of collaboration and support, encapsulated in our saying, “No One Dives Alone.” This ethos means that no matter what problem I might encounter, there’s always someone at Oceans who has the knowledge or experience to help find a solution. This support network has been crucial in helping me navigate the complexities of my role.

As someone who loves to travel, the ability to work from anywhere has allowed me to maintain a work-life balance that suits my lifestyle.
